Racing Post Trophy 2009

The Racing Post Trophy is always worth keeping an eye on for the following year's 2000 Guineas and the Derby for that matter. Last year it was an absolute cracker with St Nicholas Abbey clearly the stand out two-year old of the field as he stormed away from the field for Aiden O'Brien. He was immediately installed as the 2000 Guineas favourite after he also beat Elusive Pimpernel who was five lengths back in second as they were put away for the winter.

Craven Stakes 2010

The Craven meeting at Newmarket is always a good pointer towards the 2000 Guineas and we saw Elusive Pimpernel make a stunning reappearance to enhance his classic claims. He simply bolted up to beat Dancing David by some distance and was slashed in the 2000 Guineas Odds as a result, the race did also frank the run of St Nicholas Abbey in the Racing Post Trophy last year and his odds were also clipped for the big race.

Greenham Stakes

The Greenham Stakes at Newbury was another big 2000 Guineas trial with all eyes on Canford Cliffs and Arcano who both had excellent results as two-year olds last season. They were both overshadowed though by Dick Turpin who pipped Canford Cliffs on the line to take the win after Canford Cliffs hung left once again. Dick Turpin has made himself a real Guineas contender now while Canford Cliffs has drifted in the market. Also with Arcano back in third he was taken out of the 2010 Guineas with connections looking to give him some extra time off.

Of course it is quite possible that many of the horses at the top of the 2000 Guineas Betting may not take in a run before heading to Newmarket as Sea The Stars did in 2009. Some trainers prefer to send that top three year-old horses straight to the Guineas before embarking on a tough season so their form as two-year old is always worth watching very closely.
